What is backfilling a pool?
It’s a common story: homeowners have a swimming pool installed when their kids are young but as the years go by, the pool goes from being the hub of summer fun to just a maintenance-heavy money sink that’s barely ever used. When this happens, people may choose to have their pool backfilled. Backfilling is a process in which the concrete structures of a swimming pool are demolished and removed, after which the excavated hole is filled in with soil, sand or gravel.
The process of backfilling a swimming pool on a Twin Cities property consists of the following steps:
- Disconnect the breaker box connected to the swimming pool to remove the hazard of electricity before you begin work.
- Drain all water from the pool until it’s empty. Follow up by drilling holes through the concrete bottom of the pool so that rainwater won’t pool there before the backfilling process is finished.
- Demolish the walls of the pool and remove all of the debris for responsible disposal.
- Backfill the former pool space with your chosen material and then compact the filling material so you’re not left with a sinkhole. At All State Companies, we prefer to use soil for backfilling pools on Twin Cities properties.
- Depending on how you intend to use the backfilled space, lay down either top soil, mulch or sod over the newly filled hole in the ground.
While it is possible to complete a do-it-yourself pool backfilling process, it isn’t recommended. Due to the challenges and risks of the various steps, it’s best to leave this job to a team of demolition professionals. Contact All State Companies today if you want the best pool demolition and backfilling services in the greater Twin Cities area!
